SFX (Special Effects): are effects that can be done on set. They are practical effects that you can see on set such as real explosions,  Prosthetic makeup…. any effect that you use on the production stage of film-making is an SFX.

VFX (Visual Effects): are the effect that is done in the post-production stage of film-making, Such as, Fake muzzle flashes, Fake explosions, Green screen composting, Matte painting, e.t.c. In VFX, you use computers to create a digitally enhanced video. The goal of all visual effects is to keep the audience focused on the story and characters, and good VFX artists are judged by their ability to make the impossible seem absolutely real.

CGI (Computer Generated Imagery): is the application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images in art, printed media, video games, films, television programs, commercials, videos, and simulators. They are characters, models or designs that are created using a computer, such as Smigo in Lord of the rings, Caesar in Dawn of the planet of the apes, and e.t.c. CGI is most commonly used to refer to static or dynamic 3D computer generated images but it also refers to static or dynamic 2D computer-generated images.
